What is ‘Renaissance Leadership?’

Everyone has a different definition of leadership. But whether you believe it is inspiring others, motivating employees, or simply effecting change, it is ultimately about making things better in your own unique way—leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment, both collectively and individually.

Alfonso Montero’s idea of “Renaissance Leadership” goes beyond extrinsic motivation, which often provides only a fleeting lift, and instead focuses on the intrinsic. It is a return to a time where we looked at the bigger picture—a cause beyond the self—with respect for how we impact not only one another, but all living things, even the planet itself.

It requires a global perspective in an interconnected world, a desire for harmony and growth, a dedication to continual self-examination: How do my actions affect those around me? What perspectives can I gain from others? How can I inspire people to become a better version of themselves? What are my motivations? What do I want my legacy to be?

Those questions are just the beginning—and you don’t need to know all of the answers. But to start your own path toward Renaissance Leadership, you must have the courage to seek them.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
